Day 272 - 02 Jul 96 - Page 04
brought the leaflets from the office, 5 Caledonian Road,
took them up to McDonald's headquarters. I also arranged
the street theatre on the day. I got hold of the pantomime
cow costume.

Q. Right. Which leaflets did you bring from the office?
A. The leaflets that I brought were the A5 London
Greenpeace leaflets. I did not bring any fact sheets with
me because it was not the custom of the group at that time
to take McDonald's fact sheets on to demonstrations to hand
out in bulk. In fact, we had not done it since 1987.

Q. So it had happened in the past then?
A. It happened, to the best of my knowledge, on two
occasions.

Q. And when were they?
A. They were October 1986, World Day of Action Against
McDonald's, October 16th. And in January 1987 we decided
to do some demonstrations outside McDonald's branches in
South London and they were taken then. Now, after that
time, as a result of handing them out in the street, there
were very knew left and we decided to reprint. They were
costly to reprint, they were a big leaflet, and we then
decided, a decision was made that we would not hand them
out any more in the street.

Soon after that, in the spring of 1987, I can remember
producing an A5 leaflet. I actually wrote the A5 leaflet.
I did it firstly for Hackney and Islington Animal Rights.
I think the group was called Islington Animal Rights then.
I did it for that group. And then shortly afterwards that
was used by London Greenpeace, the A5 leaflet, and
thereafter that was always used on street demonstrations.

Q. Okay. Mr. Nicholson says that he thinks that he saw you
with a stack of the anti-McDonald's fact sheets that we are
being sued over under your arm on this demonstration though
he does not remember whether or not -- well, he did not see
you handing any out, and he also says that he saw me with a
whole pile of anti-McDonald's fact sheets on this
demonstration, distributing them. Do you have any comment
about that?
A. Yes. As I said earlier, to the best of my knowledge
there were no anti-McDonald's fact sheets there. I
certainly did not take any and I do not believe that anyone
who was involved in the group would have taken any with
them. That does not mean that someone else might not have
brought some with them, because the sort of group London
Greenpeace was, people did used to bring other leaflets
than the ones we brought ourselves to demonstrations.

Now, I may have handed out some leaflets that day. I spent
a lot of the time in the cow costume. I was part of that.
I may have handed out some leaflets myself. If I had done,
they would have been the A5 leaflets because that is the
one I took. You, Helen, I can only remember you on that
day holding that Greenpeace banner. I do not remember you
handing out any leaflets at all on that day. And also, as
I remember it, there was also the Veggies version as well
