Day 277 - 10 Jul 96 - Page 09
Q. Right. If you go to page 97 in the book?
A. Yes.

Q. There is a mention of McDonald's in this book. Do you
recall that this book mentioned McDonald's?
A. Yes.

Q. Was this seen -- I will read out the reference. It says at
the bottom of page 97: "While companies like Burger King
and Jack in the Box admit to using imported beef other
chains sensitive to the growing anger about deforestation
have sought to disassociate themselves from the ranches,
issuing public statements stressing their lack of
involvement with the trade. Some of these to not stand up
to very close examination. McDonald's, by far the largest
food chain"--
A. Fast food chain.

Q. "... fast food chain" et cetera, "categorically denies
that it uses beef from outside the USA. On the spot
investigations in Central America showed that beef from
Guatemala and Costa Rica was sold to McDonald's. The
discrepancy is possible because the Meat Importers Council
of America categorises any meat imported to the USA as
"domestic beef" so that McDonald's can legally say that
they "obtain their meat within the United States" whereas
it was actually raised in the ashes of tropical rain
forests."
A. Yes.

Q. Do you recall that section?
A. Yes. I am pretty sure that this book was referred to
in some reference document about sources of information.

Q. That London Greenpeace produced?
A. That was produced by somebody in London Greenpeace.

Q. Or somebody, yes. Just a related question to that, if I
can just say, that book, in the inside of the cover it says
"First published 1985"?
A. Yes.

Q. Regarding myself, if I cast my mind back to the time when
you first became involved with the group you said that I
was not coming to many meetings at that time, but do you
recall whether I was the kind of person who would be aware
of underlying information and discussion about the kind of
information in the leaflet that London Greenpeace was
putting out? Would I be aware of books on shelves?
A. I was aware that you had been involved in political
activity for a considerable number of years, that you
obviously, whenever I spoke to you it was apparent that you
had read quite, you know, a wide variety of books about
ecology, working practices, other political books and
things like that. I mean, I cannot recall any specific
books that you have talked to me about having read but I do
remember that, you know, we have talked on occasions in the
past about various political books and various ecological
books, and so on.
