Day 277 - 10 Jul 96 - Page 20

       A. It is my recollection that nigh on nothing in the notes
about McDonald's, apart from people reporting on pickets
that were organised by other organisations or that were
going to be organised by other organises or reading out
letters from other people written about McDonald's.

  Q. Well, we are going to have a look at some of those later on
probably today. The demonstration, do you call it a picket
       or a demonstration, on 16th October 1989?
       A. Picket.

  Q. How many people were there in all do you think, roughly?
       A. 30 or so. I don't know

  Q. And that event was not directed against anybody but
       McDonald's was it?
       A. It was a picket of McDonald's head office, yes.

  Q. Yes, but the thrust of the picket was anti-McDonald's was
       it not?
       A. Well, as has been referred to previously, McDonald's
symbolised what was wrong with the way society was being
run for multinationals to make their profits rather than
for the benefit of people living on the planet.

  Q. Quite, but the target was McDonald's?
       A. The picket was of McDonald's, yes.

  Q. And all the literature and the banners were antiMcDonald's
       were they not?
       A. I can't say that all the literature was because people
did used to bring along other leaflets about other subjects
and, in fact, when I went to Barlow Lyde & Gilberts offices
and looked at the original leaflets I do remember that for
at least one picket there was actually quite a selection of
leaflets about totally different subjects in the originals
which don't appear in the bundles that we have got in
       court.

  Q. Banners saying, for example, "Save the Rainforest, Boycott
       the Burger"?
       A. Which doesn't mention McDonald's.

  Q. No, of course not.
       A. It talks about the burger industry.

  Q. "McDonalds, McDeath, McCancer, McWaste, McHunger" had
nothing to do with McDonald's either I suppose; is that
       right?
       A. I did not say that.

  Q. No. The two people in pursuit of Mr. Howes, Mr. Gravett
and somebody else, being chopped up with a stage chopper,
or whatever it is, pantomime axe I think you called it?
       A. Yes.

  Q. That is, I suppose, you would say is a general comment and
not specifically directed at McDonald's or not?
       A. I don't remember any specific thing about McDonald's
-- I mean, it might have been mentioned. I don't know.
