Day 278 - 11 Jul 96 - Page 03
A. I have actually got one so--

Q. All right. Well, that is fine, use your own. The third
passage I would like you to look at is on the first inside
page under the main heading "What is the connection between
McDonald's and starvation in the Third World?" Then, under
"Hungry for Dollars", one sees this, "McDonald's is one of
several giant corporations with investments in vast tracts
of land in poor countries sold to them by the dollar hungry
rulers, often military and privileged elites, evicting the
small farmers that live there growing food for their own
people." There is nothing in any of the material which you
had read which supports that is there?
A. Well, yes, I would say there is.

Q. What is that?
A. McDonald's does have investments in vast tracts of
lands in poor countries. It has interests in the cattle
that are raised there.

Q. What, sold to them by the rulers?
A. The investments, yes.

Q. I see. Right. Then we will go over to the next, the
middle page under the heading "Why is it wrong for
McDonald's to destroy rainforests?" And then we come to
"Pet food and environment/index.html">litter. McDonald's and Burger King are two
of the many US corporations using lethal poisons to destroy
vast areas of central American rainforest to create grazing
pastures for cattle to be sent back to the States as
burgers and pet food and to provide fast food packaging
materials." There is nothing in any of the material which
you rely on which supports that statement is there?
A. I have read quite a number of things about McDonald's
involvement in ex-rainforest beef. I have also read things
about fast food packaging materials. I believe that was
true.

Q. Could I ask you please to--?
A. I am not pretending to be an expert in the subject. I
go on, what about is reported by other organisations, what
is reported by respected scientists or environmentalists,
or whatever.

Q. Can I just--
A. I have read, as I said before, there is nothing in this
leaflet that I had not seen virtually the same thing
printed elsewhere. Obviously, the wording would be
slightly different but there is nothing in the leaflet
which was new.

Q. Would you like to take a look at "Hoof Prints on the
Forest"?
A. If you want me to.

Q. Yes, please. It is in your kingfisher file, your first set
of discovery at--

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Mr. Rampton, I am sorry to interrupt. I
would like to ask one thing about the land before you carry
