Day 297 - 08 Nov 96 - Page 09
come with a wide variety of other nutrients. And that is
referred to in the World Health Organisation report -
I checked it last night - on page 95 of the report.

The statement that eating too much fat can encourage heart
disease and some cancers -- sorry, the statement that
eating too much fat can encourage heart disease and that
some cancers, including breast cancer, may be linked to a
high fat style of eating, was considered to be a fair
comment by Professor Wheelock. That was on day 21, page
27. Although he said that there was no definite cause and
effect shown, but I would repeat the same point, that that
is irrelevant. The point is whether or not there is a
risk.

Professor Wheelock stated that there was no doubt that if
you have a diet that is high in fat then it is likely you
will eat more food and consume more calories. That was day
21, page 34. So that was the additional disadvantage of
having a high fat diet. Because it is not particularly
filling, it does encourage you to eat more food and
therefore more likely to consume more calories than you
need.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: When I come to eating more food, I can
really only judge it by the amount of calories, can I
not? I cannot do it by any sort of volume or anything
like that, because foods vary so much.

MS. STEEL: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MS. STEEL: I am not entirely sure why would you want to judge
it by anything else.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, I do not think I did. It is just you
used the phrase, no doubt taken from him, eating more food
and consuming more calories, and you could cut out the
'eating more food' and just have 'consume more calories'.

MS. STEEL: Yes.

MR. MORRIS: The important point is that if the food is lacking
in bulk, then your body wants more food because you are not
satisfied, so if you are regularly eating high fat meals,
you are encouraged to eat more by your body because it has
not been satisfied.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I do not know about that.

MR. MORRIS: That is the fundamental basis of obesity, as far
as I understand it; that you are eating the wrong kind of
foods and you are eating too much of them because your body
wants more.

MS. STEEL: I actually misunderstood your question.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I do not know. I mean, I would have thought
if you are eating an awful lot of fruit and vegetables, if
