Who's a Boojum?
Kent Madin and Linda Svendsen have been active as guides, teachers and
adventurers for 25 years. Both can trace their love of travel and
challenge to undergraduate work at Prescott College and employment at
Outward Bound. In 1984, as China opened up, they organized and led the
first group of tourists to visit the Wolong Panda Reserve. From there they became intrigued with the possibility of horseback travel in China's remote regions. Since 1985, when they ran the first horseback trip in Inner
Mongolia, they have traveled on horseback with Tibetans, Oroqen, Kazakhs
and Mongols.
Lin Xue Biao, started as a local tourist guide in Sichuan province in
1984 but his open mind and personal drive led him to start his own
company, Global Expeditions, in order to pursue new ideas in adventure
tourism in China. After 12 years, Lin is still our main partner in the
Tibet and Kazakh rides and his company has expanded to include some of
China's first mountaineering, scuba and bicycling tours.
Batchuluun Sanjsuren, our partner in Mongolia, is an avid outdoorsman
and passionate spokesman for Mongolia as it emerges from 70 years of
communism. "Baagi" as he is known, spent much of the last decade
fighting for the establishment of democracy in Mongolia and in the
summer of 1996 his dream was realized when the democratic coalition won
an unexpected victory at the ballot box over the old communists.
Ethan Goldings, an anthropologist, mountaineer, and linguist, has lived
among the "black tent nomads" of eastern Tibet on and off for the last
ten years. His mastery of Tibetan and Chinese and his studied and
realistic understanding of central Asian politics and philosophy makes
him our top guide in Tibet and China.
Christoph Schork, guides for us in Mongolia when he isnφt running his
flying and glider school at the base of the Tetons or competing in
endurance rides or skiing and shooting his way to a world championship
in ski archery. He brings years of experience as a rider, teacher and
adventurer to each trip.
