SEGA Pinball History

The SEGA console evolution looks as follows: Sega Master System, Genesis (Sega Mega Drive), Game Gear, Sega CD, 32X, Saturn. Then there were other things like the Nomad, CDX, etc... And for the pinball evolution...

Genesis

    Another high scroller.

    Devils Crash
  • Devils Crash Release by Tecno Soft in 1991
The table reminds me much of Starball (Volume11/1996) for PC, long table, three sections, subtables etc. Even more it has similarites with Tsumera Pinball. Silly figures walking around the table, physics which are nothing to talk about and some layoutish similarites. Still playable and maybe enjoyable for a while.

  • Dinoland Pinball Release by Wolf Team in (1991). Small pixel-cute (non-godzilla, is that really a dinosaur?) dinosaurs stomping around on the table.

  • Sonic the Hedgehog - Spinball Released by SEGA during the nineties!
Control Sonic the Hedgehog as he spins around the table, bumps agains the wall, the bad guys and roll trough pipes. A kind a enjoyable pinball, sonic spins all the time and flippers are spread out on a gigantic playfield with areas connected by various pipes ("ramps"), you hit simple drop targets and unlock bonus areas. To complete (you advance trough different tables) the first table you have to collect five gemstones, not so difficult, takes a little playing and discovering of the table. Neat! Not so realistic but fun for a while. You can also controll sonic a little when he spins around free floating in the air by using the arrow keys, though you can only slightly adjust how he goes, guess you can see it as a "fake" tilt.

    virtual pinball logo
  • Virtual Pinball Released by BudgeCo Inc 1993.
Concept and Program by: Bill Budge
    Graphics by: Nick Corea
    Music and Sound: Nu Romantic
    Produced by: Jim Simmons

The most interesting pinball though for the Genesis must be this one. Bill Budge is as all pinball historicans know the programmer of the first pinball construction set by the name Pinball Construction Set. He also made Raster Blaster which is if not the first one of the very first pinball games ever released. Virtual Pinball consists of lots of tables, over 20 I think. I got the impression they are all connected to each other like a multitable, thus completeing the object of one table trasfers you to the next. You can play any table you like though and don't have to travel to it each time. The tables are kind a fun (well for a while), not realistic, but as a pinball game it works out kind a great and is quite enjoyable, far more realistic playing imo than in the other genesis pinballs.

menu, select object cursor, place object A construction kit is also included, basicly you have a 2 screen high and wide table area on which you place objects to construct a table, all wysiwyg. You move a cursor shaped like the obect you will place, click a button and place it, click another button and a object menu appears, choose an object an the cursor takes on that form, no more to it!

    psycho pinball
  • Psycho Pinball Released by Codemster in 1993.
I'm not sure but I think Psycho was originally released for Genesis (not for pc) and was hailed as the best (pinball) for the console. Not so hard to understand since compared to the rest of what you today find for genesis I think this pinball stands out quite well. The pc version is a lot better though, smoother, better sound, graphics and most of all better feeling.

    Emulation

There is a SEGA arcade emulator, though that hasn't got more to do with the SEGA console history than uhm well nevermind. If you want to try out the Genesis pinballs mentioned above on your pc there is a genesis emulators available. Since the rom files are illegal I wont make any available for download though you might want to check classicgaming.com and see if they are going to open their genesis rom archive again.
