Extrude Modifier

Adds depth to a shape and makes it into parametric object.

What's New in Max 2.0

Grid Capping Change: In a minor change to this modifier, when you choose the Grid capping option, the grid lines are now hidden edges rather than visible. This primarily affects any objects using the Grid option that have wire material assigned, or are using the Lattice modifier.

Mapping the Caps: When Generate Mapping Coords is checked, additional mapping coordinates are now applied to the end capsplacing a single 1 x 1 tile on each cap.

Generate Material IDs: When this new checkbox is checked, different material IDs are assigned to the sides and the caps of the extruded object. Specifically, the sides receive ID 3, and the caps receive IDs 1 and 2.

This checkbox is checked as a default when you create an extruded object, but if you load an extruded object from an R1.x .max file, the checkbox will be unchecked, maintaining the same material ID assignment for that object as it had in R1.x.

Extrude Parameters

Amount: Sets the depth of the extrusion.

Segments: Specifies the number of segments available for path editing.

Capping Area

Cap Start/End: Generates a flat surface over the start or the end of the extruded object.

Grid: Arranges cap faces in a square grid trimmed at the shape boundaries. This method produces a surface of evenly sized faces that can be easily deformed by other modifiers.

Morph: Arranges cap faces in a predictable, repeatable pattern necessary for creating Morph targets. Morph capping can generate long, thin faces that do not render or deform as well as grid capping. Use morph capping primarily if you are extruding multiple morph targets.

Output Area

Patch: Makes the extruded object a patch that can be

Mesh: Makes the extruded object a polygon mesh that can be modified with Edit Mesh.

Generate Mapping Coordinates: Creates the extruded object with mapping coordinates already applied.

How To

To Extrude a Star

  1. Create A Star
  2. Select Extrude from the Modify panel.
  3. The Star now has depth

  4. Adjust the various parameters to achieve different effects.
