Smooth Modifier

Provides animated auto-smoothing ability. You can apply new smoothing groups to objects on a frame-by-frame basis.

A checkbox has been added to the Smooth modifier to modify the autosmoothing algorithm and fix certain rare smoothing problems.

Smooth Parameters

Auto Smooth: If Auto Smooth is checked, the object is auto smoothed using the (animatable) threshold specified by the spinner below it. Auto Smooth sets the smoothing groups based on the angle between faces. Any two adjacent faces will be put in the same smoothing group if the angle between their normals is less than the threshold angle.

Prevent Indirect Smoothing: Check this to prevent smoothing ‘leaks” when using Auto Smooth. If you apply Auto Smooth to an object, and portions of that object that should not be smoothed become smoothed, then check this item to see if it will correct the problem. Note that this option only has effect when Auto Smooth is checked. Note also that the problem it corrects is rare, and that checking this slows the Auto Smooth process. In other words, don’t use this checkbox unless you see something wrong with your existing smoothing.

Threshold: Set this to specify the threshold angle in degrees. Any two adjacent faces will be put in the same smoothing group if the angle between their normals is less than the threshold angle.

Smoothing Groups Area

The grid of 32 buttons shows which smoothing groups are used by the selected faces.

How To

To smooth an object, do this:

  1. Select the object to be smoothed.
