Theme by Steve Rowlands
For tributes and more screenshots of this remarkable game go to Gabriele Priarone's Page, C64 section, where all will be explained (Gabriele is the world's biggest Creatures fan: unless you know better).
The Torture Chamber theme presented here is unusual for me in that there is virtually no MIDI component: the tune is just sampled SID, combined with Dance rhythm samples, and a sample/hold synth sample. It sounds very different to my other stuff, doesn't it?
During the construction of this piece I looked at the waveforms Steve was using in the piece, since he appeared to be using one voice for simultaneous bass/drums (normally one would alternate with the other, as in a lot of Rob's work). What I found was that Steve generated a very short bass tone, followed almost immediately by a rhythm waveform, squashed together that the ear hears the illusion of simultaneous voices. Very clever, Steve!
The most attractive feature of the piece for me was the brilliant way it
conveys something "impending". It is reminiscent of the soundtrack they played
in Warner Brothers' cartoons when a machine had just started up, prior to a particularly
unfortunate toon being sliced into small chunks.

Steve Rowlands. Great bass and drums. The two phrases go
together like Manchester City and defeats (and I am a City fan.) The music for Creatures
is one of Steve Rowlands' finest, and so when the Zzap! 64 demo was issued, I played it
for hours, mainly because of this meaty and bouncy main theme that played while Clyde
Radcliffe was trying to save the lovable Fuzzies. The drum and bass really form the
backbone of this tune, sounding loud and dominant, along with a nice background instrument
and great main voice that just offsets the two at the right pitch. So hands up if you
thought your copy of Creatures had crashed as you had to wait 5-10 seconds for the title
theme?
