Zusammenfassung
The use of desktops as graphical user interfaces for the interaction with computer systems is common ever since the Apple Macintosh or Microsoft Windows 95 respectively. By the time, the desktop grew in use and complexity of applications. However, the adoption of mobile use of desktops seem to be missing. Cross-Desktop is a project focusing on the development of a webbased desktop that is purely build on HTML and JavaScript.
The Cross-Desktop will achieve a content-creation issue that most virtual file-stores do not satisfy. Based on a so called port-80 philosophy, the desktop will be accessible from within nearly any plattform and device that includes a browser. No Java or other plugins are necessary to run the desktop. Some applications for the desktop may be obvious, like e-mail, calender, and file management. Other applications grow the desktop to a content-creation plattform that misses only few functionalities. Integration of an DHTML-Editor attached to templates allow text-writing with the comfort of pdf creation. Graphics and photos can easily be edited with the integration of MagickStudio.
The Cross-Desktop being installed on a dedicated or virtual server together with a permanent backbone connection allows the integration of sceduled download and information services that even allow to record radio programs with user's absence. The ongoing move to host-based computing for enterprise desktop applications seem to open a perspective for a new way of desktop working with a mobile issue. In this thread thin clients and content-management become a real target that go far of today's html-page perspective.
