The Nature Conservancy of Washington web site on this Site Builder Workshop CD-ROM is designed to be viewed in the version of Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 included on this CD-ROM. If you are currently viewing the web site using another browser, please locate Internet Explorer 3.0 on the CD-ROM, install it then return to this page. Please note that many pages in this "beta" version of the site were tested only with the build of Internet Explorer on this CD.
Many pages in this web site also use ActiveX controls. These controls enhance the features of Internet Explorer, providing multimedia and interactive features. In most cases the controls are installed automatically when you load a page that
requires them. In other cases, you must install the controls separately. In those cases, you can download the controls
just prior to viewing a page, or download all controls first, so as not to interrupt your reading experience. A list of
controls and installation instructions appears below.
INSTALLATION NOTE: One of the powerful new features of Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 is its ability to dynamically download and install software components such as ActiveX controls. This component download process employs digital signatures to verify the origin of a particular piece of software and gives you the option of refusing its installation.
However, some of the software needed to view this "beta" version of the site is distributed in packages that have not been digitally signed by their respective publishers. When you attempt to install one of these packages using Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0, you will be presented with a warning message for each file, informing you that the package is not known to be safe and offering you the option of cancelling the installation.
For digitally signed packages, Internet Explorer 3.0 will present you with a message attesting to that fact. This message will also offer you the opportunity to cancel the installation. You can configure the security functions of Internet Explorer 3.0 by choosing Options from the View menu and then selecting the Security tab.
If you wish to wait to download the software components, simply follow the instructions that appear on your screen when you reach the pages that use them. To install all the controls beforehand, use the links below.
- The following software components are distributed as self-extracting executable files. You may install them either by lauching the EXE files directly from the CD-ROM or by following the links below:
- Download and install the Microsoft HTML Layout Control and supporting files here (file: setupalx.exe, 1614 KB). This package has not been digitally signed.
- Download and install the Adobe® Acrobat® Reader 3.0 Beta 1 and ActiveX control
here (file: rdrx32b1.exe, 3012 KB). This package has been digitally signed. More info on Adobe Acrobat ActiveX control.
- Download and install the ActiveMovie ActiveX control here (file: amovie.exe, 958 KB). This allows playing of AVI's, MPG's and other video formats embedded in HTML.
- The following ActiveX controls are installed by loading pages containing samples of the controls, using the dynamic download and installation process described above.
- Download and install sample controls from Microsoft's ActiveX Control Gallery here.
(file: ax.cab, 400 KB). This package has been digitally signed.
- Download and install the Macromedia® Active Shockwave™ control here (files: sw.cab, swmmdep.cab, 861 KB). This package has not been digitally signed. More info on Active Shockwave.
- Download and install the Progressive Networks RealAudio™ ActiveX control here (file: raocx32.dll, 91 KB). This package has been digitally signed. More info on the RealAudio ActiveX control.
