Installing Sapphire/Web
Overview
This chapter details the steps needed to install Sapphire/Web on your UNIX system. Since the Sapphire/Web tool addresses and integrates such a large and diverse group of technologies, one person may not have the responsibility to install the separate components. Therefore, we have divided the major steps into four groups: System Administration, Web Administration, Database Administration, and User. Those people responsible for each of these areas may want to complete the relevant steps themselves. However, an individual user can install Sapphire/Web on most systems without trouble.
Sapphire runs in two parts: the Sapphire/Web, which is used to create and test projects, and the Sapphire/Gateway, which allows Sapphire/Web to connect with databases over a network. These two parts come in the Sapphire/Web distribution together, but are configured and executed separately. The Sapphire/Gateway must be running during project development, but is optional during project deployment-Sapphire/Web projects consist of pure C code and HTML, and can run independently of Sapphire. If you choose to create a project that uses a database and will not be running Sapphire/Gateway, you will need to find alternate means of linking your project with your database.
