REVIEW BY COLIN
***************
When I first received this disk in the post, I thought that it was a
Stossers dream come true, basically this program will load and play a
sequence of pictures with sound samples as an intro to your video master-
piece.
On the disk there are 5 modules that help you to achieve this, the
main one being the editor. On selecting this, you are presented with the
main editing menu for creating your sequences. There are a host of features
that are icon driven. On the left hand side is your information display
panel, included in this is a frame counter with facilities to delete and
insert a frame.
Next we have the screen mode, you can either display or
dissolve a screen using the special effects panel underneath it. There are
up to 270 ways you can display a picture and 184 ways that can dissolve it
with the addition of a help icon to advise you on what option you decide,
you can view the Picture to see the Effect play first, just in case you
want to change it.
Underneath this we have the sound department, you can
load up a .SAM Signed Sample (Maestro Compatable) and play it, though the
Sample must not be more than 30K in length (Provisions for longer Samples
have been made and are in the Manual). The samples can be played Forwards
/Reverse/Sweep/Loop Forward and Loop Backwards at frequencies from 6-20Khz
and can be placed at the start, during or at the end of a displayed
picture, you can then select how many seconds to want to display a Frame
for or use the Key press facility. Sequences are saved as VSS Files, the
File Selector is very impressive, though it dosn't like disk changes as it
tends to go to the desktop rather than go back to the editor, also if you
have not completed a Sequence, the same thing applies.
This is not the only bug however, there are at least
two other bugs that need to be sorted out as in certain conditions the
keyboard buffer will not clear itself, resulting in an everlasting loop of
a mouse pointer fighting a bee, (Know what I mean!!). Also if you loop a
sample while a picture is scrolling in some of the modes, you tend to get
rather an unusual sound effect that's not in the manual, I dare say that
these little Gremlins should be fixed with Version 2, if the Author knows
about them.
You can run this on a standard ST,so you don't have to worry about Memory
problems, though the next version will be for 1 Meg,provided there is
enough response. The other Modules supplied on Disk are Compacter, this
will as implied, Compact a Neo or Degas Picture and Save it as an MBK File
but you must make sure that you are using a duplicate copy of the picture
as, in the compacting process it will auto-matically erase your piccy for
good. The Quick Try Module will Load up and play a sequence, provided you
saved it as Quicktry.VSS. The last two Modules are a Runner that will
Load and play your own named .VSS Sequence, and the preparer module that
will load up your sequence, ask you if you want it to loop at the end or
not, then you're asked to select either to return to the Desktop, reset the
computer or run another program after your sequence has finished. There
are two Demo Files to play around with, and two folder that contain many
MBK Picture Files and SAM Sound Samples.
All in all, the concept of this Program is good,
though I feel that it could be improved by returning back to the Module
Selector Menu after using any of the other Modules instead of returning to
the Desktop,as you have to Reboot this up every time and can be a pain in
the Proverbial Backside. You can obtain the Video Supreme Package by
Scott King from GOODMAN INTERNATIONAL who are the Distributors for this
product.
