of VSUK via phone, and then you'd receive their [great] magazine "The
Vegetarian" and the Vegetarian Handbook. They also have a children's
quarterly magazine. I think the magazine is 10 pounds. With membership
16 pounds. Airmail delivery is 10 pounds additional. Their phone

Buddhist community. Nice food!

Britain and Ireland
______________________________________________________________________
Many thanks to Geraint Edwards <gedge@inner.demon.co.uk> for
maintaining the listings for Britain (England, Scotland, Wales) and
Ireland.
Vegetarian guides are sold everywhere. e.g.: "Vegetarian Guide to the
Scottish Highlands and Islands", "Vegetarian London", etc.
There are several nationally-circulated vegetarian-oriented magazines
available in any big newsagents that have pages and pages of small
ads.
Wimpy, Burger King, and just about every restaurant chain except for
McDonalds serves a bean burger at its stores in Britain/Ireland. Also,
most main-line railway stations have a "Casey Jones" burger shop in
them, selling "Mexican Bean Burgers", which are much the same thing
again.
Phoning from abroad, replace the initial '0' in the area code with the
country code:
Britain (England, Scotland, Wales): +44
Northern Ireland: +44? Irish Republic: +?

Bath

Demuths Cafe
- Vegetarian coffee/tea house with lunches. Vegan food identified.
Fairly cheap (Soup and roll 2.50).
Tilleys
- Restaurant next door but 2 to Demuths. Meat and Vegetarian, but has
a V. menu, with real choices. Specialises in starters (ie no main
courses; one eats 3 starters). Moderately expensive, but
worthwhile.
Birmingham
----------
Ginger's Vegetarian Eating House, 7a High Street, Kings Heath,
021 444 0906

B29 6HJ, 021 471 2459
The Warehouse Cafe, Friends of the Earth (Birmingham),
54 Alison Street, Digbeth, B5 5TH, 021 633 0261
Plus the many Kashmiri/Pakistani/Indian/Balti/Tandoori places always
have at least half a dozen veggie dishes, many have a lot more.
Brighton
--------
Vegetarian Restaurants:
Slims, Churchill Square (lower level), very near the clock tower
Food For Friends, 17 Prince Albert Street, very near the clock tower,
tel. 736236
- Open Mon-Sun 9am-10pm.
Harlequinade, 13 Dyke road, very near the clock tower, tel. 821787
- Closed from 3pm-6pm.
Terre a Terre, 7 Pool Valley, Brighton, tel. 729051
- Vegetarian and vegan food.
Bristol
-------
Pushpanjali's, Summerhill Road (?), Bristol. (Just by the entrance to
the Bristol Iyengar Yoga centre)
- Looks like a converted fish and chip shop, but the food is very
authentic and unusual. They also do take away, including an enormous
variety of Indian sweets which are sold from a display which looks
uncannily like a converted fried fish display.
Cambridge
---------
King's Pantry, 9 King's Parade, Opposite main gate to King's College,
Tel: 0223 321 551
- Vegetarian and wholefood restaurant. King's Pantry was a front
runner for Vegetarian Living's Restaurant of the Year. Try it out!
Open Mon-Sun 08:30-17:30 and also 18:30-21:30 Tue-Sat.
Cheltenham
----------
Peppers, High Street
- Scruffy, food Ok, but avoid the "roast" potatoes - pre fried in oil,
then reheated in microwave. Puddings good. Cheap.
Chester
-------
The Abbey Green restaurant
- Won an award one year for best veggie restaurant or somesuch.
It's rather more in the gourmet league than most veggie restaurants.
Quite pricey. Now opened a meat-eating restaurant in the same
building. Good cakes.
Francs
- Omnivorous restaurant, but does serve a fairly good selection of
vegetarian food. The set menu is very good value - although it is
omnivorous, they will do an entirely vegetarian version, but you
must tell them in advance! Highly recommended mushrooms baked in
Brie. Not sure about vegan options.
Croydon
-------
Hockneys'
- Used to be full time restaurant, but now only does lunches.
Good, as are the very filling sandwiches from the wholefood shop
nextdoor.
Dunstable
---------
Norman King, Church Street, 0582 661603
- A pub that offers vegan and vegetarian food, lunchtimes and
evenings. The vegan choice is one main course (chili) and a couple
of snacks, but this is good for a pub.
Coconut Garden, 52-54 West Street, 0582 667837
- A Malaysian restaurant offering a separate vegetarian menu with
vegan food. I have not been here yet, but the food is probably
Buddhist in origin. Open Tue-Sun 6pm-12pm.
Liverpool
---------
Casa Italia, near Moorfields Station
- Italian restaurant, some vegetarian options. Good food. Not too
expensive. Licensed.
Everyman Theatre, very near the university
- Vegetarian-friendly. It has a restaurant/bar which has wholefood &
vegetarian items. It seems to be open independantly of whether the
theatre is open or not. By all accounts it is very good.

Honey, molasses, and raw sugars are used for sweeteners, and all
eggs are free-range. All fresh fruit and vegetables are carefully
selected and whenever possible these are organically grown. We are
committed to using these ingredients with integrity to produce high
quality wholefood that is both natural and delicious. Cranks

Luton
-----
Alankar, 276 Dunstable Road, Luton, 0582 410374.
- 'Indian' restaurant offering a wider than normal selection of
vegetable dishes, at a low price (~#2.00) and (unlike some in Luton)
prepared to serve them without being obliged to buy a 'main'
(ie meat) dish.
Shapla Tandoori, 45 Wellington Street, Luton, 0582 481554.
- As above, but slightly less choice.
There are several 'Indian' resaurants on Wellington Street,
all offer vegetable dishes but not all will serve just vegetable side
dishes, you may have to have vegetable byriani.
33 Arts Centre, 33 Guildford Street, Luton.
- The entrance to this arts' centre is a wholefood vegetarian and
vegan cafe. As well as cooked meals (casseroles, chilis etc) there
are veggie sausage rolls, pasties and cakes that are vegan. Small
but good atmosphere, daytimes.
Malvern
-------
Brief Encounters, Malvern Station.
- Veggie (in evenings). Mid price range, atmospheric - set in old
waiting room of still used station. Entrance is from the platform.
Is a tea shop in day time serving non-vegetarian sandwiches.
Reasonable food.
Manchester
----------
The Eigth Day, Oxford Road (Opposite Metropolitan Uni)
- Very good vege(taria)n cafe.
The Greenhouse, Great North Western Street, Rusholme
- Excellent vege(taria)n restaurant.
City Art Galary Cafe, Mosley Street
- Very nice, not wholly vegetarian though.
Cornerhouse, 70 Oxford Street
- Good variety, but again, not wholly vegetarian.
Pie in the Sky, 160b Wellington Rd, Withington
- Vegetarian. OK.
Topkapi, Peter Street
- Turkish cafe and restaurant (next door to each other) offering a
selection of mezeler (starters) and a cheese kofta kebab for the
lactos. Mezeler include, stuffed cabbage, humus, falafel, barbunya,
fasouleh, salads, and several cheese and yoghurt dishes. Great place
for lunches.
Kai's, in Chinatown
- To all intents and purposes this is a standard Chinese restaurant
open until 4am. But it also has a special Buddhist vegetarian menu.
The dishes read: sweet and sour pork, chicken with cashew nuts,
roast duck... around 20 in all with about half being non-'meaty'
eg abalone mushrooms, pot of prosperity. The dishes are designed to
mimic the textures of meat using tofu, gluten and taro, I love them
but some people still feel a bit squeamish ordering such dishes.
Be prepared to queue if you arrive just after pub closing time or
just after club kickout.
There are now a number of restaurants in Chinatown offering this
type of food but, beware, I have been served real sweet and sour
spare-ribs instead of the mock dish in one such place.
Chuni's Indian Cottage, Rusholme
- This is probably the finest Indian restaurant in Manchester,
the owners are Hindu Indians, and, although they do pander to the
meat-eaters, they have one of the most extensive and inventive
vegetarian menus around, but they do include a lot of cream and
cheese. Great surroundings, great service, great food.
There are dozens of 'Indian' resaurants in Rusholme, indeed the
council are promoting it as 'the curry mile'. Just about every place
will offer a wide selection of vegetarian food (it's near the
University) although the quality varies enormously, though the prices
don't --- a cartel seems to operate.
Nottingham
----------
Hiziki, Hockley
- Briliant food.
Plaistow
--------
Clements, Plaistow, West Sussex (Near Dunsfold)
- Very Very good. Expensive #20.00 per head for evening meal.
That's for the 5 course with aperative. Normally choice of 4 main
courses. Great quality.
Tewkesbury
----------
Corse Lawn Hotel, Corse Lawn, Nr Tewkesbury
- Very good, very expensive. French Style - caters well for veggies,
but also has meat floating around.
Ullapool
--------
The Ceidhl Place, Ullapool
- Restaurant is expensive but good. Menu is vegetarian, but the
restaurant also has non-vegetarian options.

Ireland
The 'Bridgestone's Irish Vegetarian Food Guide' lists vegetarian
restaurants, wholefood shops, and vegetarian places to stay.
Belfast
-------
Giros, Belfast Youth and Community, Donegall Lane (off Donegall
Street), 0232-244640
- This youth resource centre has just opened (Summer 93) and its
cafe offers a range of vegetarian and, more often than not, vegan
food. Opening hours are a bit erratic and are limited to office
hours Mon-Sat, I think.
The Spice of Life, 62 Lower Donegall Street, 0232-332744
- Belfast's only veggie restaurant, which unfortunately should
be avoided at lunchtime due to extremely mediocre service and
average food. However Thu-Sat evening experiences have been
bearable with live music sometimes. Bring your own drink.
Vegetarian-Friendly Restaurants:
Angelos Ristorante, 23 Donegall Pass, 0232-246900
- Slightly expensive but very high quality italian NON-VEGETARIAN
restaurant. However, they have a very flexible attitude to their
menu and consequently are very amenable to veg(etari)ans.
Recommended for special occasions.

- Offer an excellent vegetarian choice on the menu. Not sure about
Vegan fare.

Edinburgh
---------
Most vegetarians can and do eat in most restaurants. Restaurants
which don't serve any vegetarian food are few and far between, and
don't prosper, as far as I can see.
Vegetarian Restaurants:

food. Features dishes from a wide variety of Indian regions.

- Open for coffee all day, hot food noon-2pm. Has about eight dishes
six of which are normally vegetarian, some vegan. Gorgeous salads,
very reasonable prices. Can get busy.

- Several vegetarian dishes. Good tofu stir fry, for example.
Gannets Bistro
- Vegetarian selection has increased over the last few years. Serve
several vegetarian dishes.
The Welsh Fudge Shop

pancakes. Good value, can be a little cramped.

The Chapter Arts Centre, Market Rd, Canton (396061)
- 20 minute walk from centre of town, small whole food cafe, bar,
mid/high price, poor. Veggie and vegan.
(snacks, but great for the alternative cinema and exhibits)
Lampeter
--------
Peppers, High Street, 0570 423 796
- By Lampeter standards, expensive-ish. Excellent meals, pricey
desserts, excellent coffee (Taylors). Nice place. Vegetarian, but
not for the fussiest: They use free-range eggs in cakes etc, rather
than egg substitute, Flora margarine in some things (contains whey).
All their cheese is vegetarian though, and their chestnut and
mushroom pie is exquisite. It has just been awarded a * in Egon
Ronay's guide, and is one of only three places in Wales to be so
highly recommended. (Apr.93)
Llanidloes
----------
Great Oak Cafe, Great Oak Street
- Good, cheap food. Exclusively vegetarian. Opposite a recommended
bookshop.

Germany
______________________________________________________________________
Germany has a chain of 'health food' stores called "Reformhaus". This
chain is not recommended though because the food is expensive and not
"biological" (i.e. comes from 'normal' farmers), and there's always a
waste of packing material. Look for stores with `Bio-Laden' or
`Naturkostladen' in their names, they're usually better.
There are several guides of vegetarian restaurants in Germany around.
You should get them in almost every `Bio-Laden'.
Berlin
------
There are literally hundreds of health food stores in Berlin,
especially in districts like Berlin-Kreuzberg, where the `alternative
culture' is quite popular. There is a health food store or health food
restaurant on every other street corner.
There is also a wealth of vegetarian restaurants in Berlin. In
addition Indian restaurants and pizzerias usually serve several
vegetarian meals. There are numerous Indian restaurants in the center
of Berlin. It might help to have a look into the Yellow Pages under
the section `Gaststaetten'.
Vegetarian Restaurants:
Hakuin, Martin-Luther-Str. 1, 1000 Berlin 30
| - Probably the most popular vegetarian restaurant in Berlin. Operated
| by German Buddhist monks. Buddhist atmosphere. Meals are somewhat
| asian and very good. Small. Expensive. Main room is non-smoking.
Restaurant Thuernagel, Gneisenaustr. 57, 1000 Berlin 61 (Kreuzberg)
- Inexpensive, customers are mainly young people.
Restaurant/Cafe Tiago, Knesebeckstr. 15, 1000 Berlin 12
(Charlottenburg)
- Inexpensive, customers are mainly students from the nearby
university. Ex-`Baghwan' restaurant.
Hollyfood, Zossener Str. 61, 1000 Berlin 61 (Kreuzberg)
- Health food snack bar.
| Health Food Stores With Snack Bars:

- Indian. Inexpensive. Central location.
Maharani, Fuggerstr. 18, 1000 Berlin 30
- Indian. Inexpensive. Directly opposite of Maharadscha, so if you
don't get a seat in one of them, just cross the road...
India Palace, Leibnizstr. 35, 1000 Berlin 12
- Indian. Very good vegetarian dishes; central location.
Tandoory, Prinz-Georg-Str. 10, 1000 Berlin 62
- Indian.
Katschkol, Pestalozzistr. 84, 1000 Berlin 62
- Afghan cuisine. Central location.

mainly students and people working at the university.

Keyno Vegetarishes Restaurant, Steinstrasse 42

stir-fried gnocchi, a Chinese/Italian treat that is not to be missed!

This is probably the only country in the world where McDonald's sells
a vegetarian burger. It's called the "Groenteburger" and it's
available at all of the 84 McDonald's restaurants in the Netherlands.
It is supposedly made of potatoes, peas, carrots, corn, onion, and
spices.

Norwegian products are boycotted by several organisations, industries
and people because of resumption of illegal whaling by Norwegians
inspite of an international ban. Norway is not a good place to visit
for vegetarians.
I had a hard time finding vegetarian food in Trondheim both the times
(in 1990 and 1993). It is difficult almost everywhere except Oslo.
