Phone & order the 1992 guide. It's about 4 pounds, and you can put it on your Mastercard or Visa. Using a credit card avoids the conversion problem. ATTENTION: from the USA, be SURE to specify AIR-MAIL, or it'll take two months by ship. The International Vegetarian Travel Guide "Lists hundreds of places to eat out & stayover!". The Vegetarian Handbook "The guide to living a vegetarian lifestyle!" about 3 pounds. Bristol ------- Pushpanjali's, Summerhill Road (?), Bristol. (Just by the entrance to the Bristol Iyengar Yoga centre) - Looks like a converted fish and chip shop, but the food is very authentic and unusual. They also do take away, including an enormous variety of Indian sweets which are sold from a display which looks uncannily like a converted fried fish display. Cambridge --------- King's Pantry, 9 King's Parade, Opposite main gate to King's College, Tel: 0223 321 551 - Vegetarian and wholefood restaurant. King's Pantry was a front runner for Vegetarian Living's Restaurant of the Year. Try it out! Open Mon-Sun 08:30-17:30 and also 18:30-21:30 Tue-Sat. Cheltenham ---------- Peppers, High Street - Scruffy, food Ok, but avoid the "roast" potatoes - pre fried in oil, then reheated in microwave. Puddings good. Cheap. Chester ------- The Abbey Green restaurant - Won an award one year for best veggie restaurant or somesuch. It's rather more in the gourmet league than most veggie restaurants. Quite pricey. Now opened a meat-eating restaurant in the same building. Good cakes. Francs - Omnivorous restaurant, but does serve a fairly good selection of vegetarian food. The set menu is very good value - although it is omnivorous, they will do an entirely vegetarian version, but you must tell them in advance! Highly recommended mushrooms baked in Brie. Not sure about vegan options. Croydon ------- Hockneys' - Used to be full time restaurant, but now only does lunches. Good, as are the very filling sandwiches from the wholefood shop nextdoor. Dunstable --------- Norman King, Church Street, 0582 661603 - A pub that offers vegan and vegetarian food, lunchtimes and evenings. The vegan choice is one main course (chili) and a couple of snacks, but this is good for a pub. Coconut Garden, 52-54 West Street, 0582 667837 - A Malaysian restaurant offering a separate vegetarian menu with vegan food. I have not been here yet, but the food is probably Buddhist in origin. Open Tue-Sun 6pm-12pm. Liverpool --------- Casa Italia, near Moorfields Station - Italian restaurant, some vegetarian options. Good food. Not too expensive. Licensed. Everyman Theatre, very near the university - Vegetarian-friendly. It has a restaurant/bar which has wholefood & vegetarian items. It seems to be open independantly of whether the theatre is open or not. By all accounts it is very good. London ------ North London Vegetarian Restaurants: Bibaqc, 2-4 Gillespie Road, Highbury, N5 1LN, (071) 704 0088 - Mainly vegan Indian food. Near Highbury tube station. Diwana Bhel Poori House, 121 Drummond Street, NW1 2HL, (071) 387 5556 (2nd location in West London). Near Euston tube station. - The food is good and cheap. Mostly South Indian (Madras area) dishes but they also have Gujarati (north-west India) dishes. Open noon-11:40pm. Spices, 30 Stoke Newington Church Street, N16 0LU, (071) 254 0528 - Excellent South Indian vegetarian restaurant. I ate vegan and I went with three flesh eaters who were all absolutely thrilled with the food. No frills, but the service is spectacular. Dish of the day, #2.75. Open noon-2:30pm & 6pm-midnight. Sun open noon-midnight. Chutneys, 124 Drummond Street, NW1, (071) 388 0604 - Food mostly from the Gujarat region of India. Good vegan choices. The lunchtime buffet is extremely good and cheap at #3.95 plus drinks (if required). I think 'lunchtime' extends quite late into the afternoon and the buffet is 'Eat as much as you like'. Milward's Restaurant, 97 Stoke Newington Church Street, N16, (071) 254-1025 - Family restaurant specializing in continental cuisine. Luton ----- Alankar, 276 Dunstable Road, Luton, 0582 410374. - 'Indian' restaurant offering a wider than normal selection of vegetable dishes, at a low price (~#2.00) and (unlike some in Luton) prepared to serve them without being obliged to buy a 'main' (ie meat) dish. Shapla Tandoori, 45 Wellington Street, Luton, 0582 481554. - As above, but slightly less choice. There are several 'Indian' resaurants on Wellington Street, all offer vegetable dishes but not all will serve just vegetable side dishes, you may have to have vegetable byriani. 33 Arts Centre, 33 Guildford Street, Luton. - The entrance to this arts' centre is a wholefood vegetarian and vegan cafe. As well as cooked meals (casseroles, chilis etc) there are veggie sausage rolls, pasties and cakes that are vegan. Small but good atmosphere, daytimes. Malvern ------- Brief Encounters, Malvern Station. - Veggie (in evenings). Mid price range, atmospheric - set in old waiting room of still used station. Entrance is from the platform. Is a tea shop in day time serving non-vegetarian sandwiches. Reasonable food. Manchester ---------- The Eigth Day, Oxford Road (Opposite Metropolitan Uni) - Very good vege(taria)n cafe. The Greenhouse, Great North Western Street, Rusholme - Excellent vege(taria)n restaurant. City Art Galary Cafe, Mosley Street - Very nice, not wholly vegetarian though. Cornerhouse, 70 Oxford Street - Good variety, but again, not wholly vegetarian. Pie in the Sky, 160b Wellington Rd, Withington - Vegetarian. OK. Topkapi, Peter Street - Turkish cafe and restaurant (next door to each other) offering a selection of mezeler (starters) and a cheese kofta kebab for the lactos. Mezeler include, stuffed cabbage, humus, falafel, barbunya, fasouleh, salads, and several cheese and yoghurt dishes. Great place for lunches. Kai's, in Chinatown - To all intents and purposes this is a standard Chinese restaurant open until 4am. But it also has a special Buddhist vegetarian menu. The dishes read: sweet and sour pork, chicken with cashew nuts, roast duck... around 20 in all with about half being non-'meaty' eg abalone mushrooms, pot of prosperity. The dishes are designed to mimic the textures of meat using tofu, gluten and taro, I love them but some people still feel a bit squeamish ordering such dishes. Be prepared to queue if you arrive just after pub closing time or just after club kickout. There are now a number of restaurants in Chinatown offering this type of food but, beware, I have been served real sweet and sour spare-ribs instead of the mock dish in one such place. Chuni's Indian Cottage, Rusholme - This is probably the finest Indian restaurant in Manchester, the owners are Hindu Indians, and, although they do pander to the meat-eaters, they have one of the most extensive and inventive vegetarian menus around, but they do include a lot of cream and cheese. Great surroundings, great service, great food. There are dozens of 'Indian' resaurants in Rusholme, indeed the council are promoting it as 'the curry mile'. Just about every place will offer a wide selection of vegetarian food (it's near the University) although the quality varies enormously, though the prices don't --- a cartel seems to operate. Nottingham ---------- Hiziki, Hockley - Briliant food. Plaistow -------- Clements, Plaistow, West Sussex (Near Dunsfold) - Very Very good. Expensive #20.00 per head for evening meal. That's for the 5 course with aperative. Normally choice of 4 main courses. Great quality. Tewkesbury ---------- Corse Lawn Hotel, Corse Lawn, Nr Tewkesbury - Very good, very expensive. French Style - caters well for veggies, but also has meat floating around. Ullapool -------- The Ceidhl Place, Ullapool - Restaurant is expensive but good. Belfast ------- Giros, Belfast Youth and Community, Donegall Lane (off Donegall Street), 0232-244640 - This youth resource centre has just opened (Summer 93) and its cafe offers a range of vegetarian and, more often than not, vegan food. Opening hours are a bit erratic and are limited to office hours Mon-Sat, I think.
