- Frank Whittle's
- engine worked
- by sucking in air
- at the front and
- expelling it at
- high speed at the
- back, forcing the
- engine forwards
- and the airstream
- backwards. The
- engine's power
- came from the heat
- produced by
- burning kerosene
- or paraffin
- #
- Although Whittle
- patented the jet
- engine as early as
- 1930, his invention
- was met with
- scorn and incom-
- prehension. He
- was so depressed
- that he allowed the
- patent to lapse in
- the mid-Thirties
- #
- In 1940 air
- superiority was
- the key to the
- war. If Britain
- had lost the
- battle for the
- skies, an invasion
- would have become
- inevitable, so both
- sides rushed to
- gain the techno-
- logical advantage
- of jet power
- #
- In September
- 1944 the British
- government
- announced that
- its jet had seen
- action for the
- first time. A
- Gloster aircraft
- had successfully
- attacked German
- "doodle bug"
- flying bombs,
- which were too
- swift for most
- propeller planes
- to catch

- Had the Royal Air
- Force appreciated
- Whittle's genius
- in the Thirties, a
- British jet could
- have been built
- by 1939, which
- would have been
- a great advantage
- when war came
- @
- As an RAF officer,
- Whittle refused
- to make a profit
- from his work.
- But in recognition
- of his achievement
- he was awarded
- £100,000 by a
- Royal Commission
- on awards
- to inventors
- #
- When the war
- was over, the
- commercial
- implications of jet
- technology began
- to be realized.
- Even in the
- Forties passenger
- aircraft reached
- unheard-of speeds
- and traveled vast
- distances. Whittle
- shrank the world
- #
- In 1951 Whittle
- predicted that the
- number of people
- who travel by air
- each day (then
- 20,000) would
- double in five
- years. But he did
- not expect
- cruising speeds to
- exceed 600 mph
- in the near future
- #
- In later life,
- Whittle's genius
- was recognized
- the world over.
- He was showered
- with honours,
- including a
- knighthood, for
- his services to
- science and to
- his country
