Command: File/Save < FS >
Purpose: A menu for saving all types of Patternland files.
Information:
You must save your work to diskette or your hard disk BEFORE
you exit Patternland if you wish to retrieve the same
weaving or other file later. When you choose the File/Quit
option, you are reminded of this fact.
Comments:
It is also PRUDENT to have at least two copies on separate
diskettes of EVERY important file. Diskettes and hard disks
are not failsafe; an entire harddisk or foppy can become
unusable in an instant--through no fault of yours. Either a
problem with the disk drive or the disk itself can be to
blame. So keep diskettes clean and away from magnets and
ALWAYS back-up your work.
To make a back-up file on a different diskette:
(1) Save the file on the original diskette.
(2) Swap the backup diskette for the original.
(3) Save the file again with the same name by simply
pressing enter instead of typing a name.
To make a backup file on a diskette for hard disk users:
(1) Save the file on your hard disk.
(2) Put a backup diskette in the A drive.
(3) Preface your filename with "A:" and save again.

Command: File/Load < FL >
Purpose: A menu for loading all types of Patternland files.
Information:
When Patternland first loads, it always reads three files:
Patland.PWV - the configuration weaving
Patland.PDV - the current printer driver
Patland.PMN - a color mix menu for color printers
You can override these names at the DOS command line when
you first load Patternland Weave Simulator:
PWS [filename] - loads "filename" weaving
PWS [printer driver filename]/p - loads driver
PWS [color print mix filename]/c - loads print mix
You can also specify the DOS drive/path to look for these
and all other weaving files, and for help files:
PWS [\path]/f - path for loading and saving files
PWS [\path]/h - path where help files are located
Comments:
The ability to reload previous work is crucial to any
program. Patternland lets you save and load various
components of your weaving so that you can "mix and match"
warps, wefts, and color palettes from several weavings.
You can create Patland.PWV and Patland.PMN files from the
File/Save menu; use the Setup/Printers option to create a
new Patland.PDV file.

Command: File/Directory < FD >
Purpose: Show a matched list of files on the specified path.
Information:
By specifying the desired path with <F2> and/or file mask
with <F3>, you can display only those files of immediate
interest on the directory.
Comments:
The path is the complete address of where the file is
living: on a floppy system it may be as simple as "B:"; on a
hard disk it might be as long as "\weaving\overshot\".
The "mask" lets only files matching its "outline" show
through. The all-enclusive mask is "*.*"; the asterisk is a
DOS wildcard which selects all files. A mask of "*.pwv"
would select all files with a ".pwv" suffix. A mask of
"Pattern1.*" would select all types of files with the
"Pattern1" prefix. Lastly, a mask of "Pattern?.pwv" would
select only "Pattern_" weaving files with any character in
place of the "?". A "?" stands for one wild character; "*"
is a wildcard name up to 8 characters.
To change to the \weaving directory: <F2> \weaving <Enter>.
To see only "Pattern" files: <F3> pattern?.* <Enter>.
To see only weaving files: <F3> *.pwv <Enter>.

______________________________________________________________
Command: File/Change < FC >
Purpose: A menu to change directories for weaving or help.
Information:
Patternland will attempt to change to the requested
directory path. If the path is invalid, an error message
warns you and Patternland returns to the previous directory.
Comments:
Use these options prior to selecting Setup/File Paths.
The setup option uses the paths you select here.

______________________________________________________________
Command: File/Change/Weaving Directory < FCW >
Purpose: Change the directory path for weaving files.
Information:
By specifying a new path you can avoid having to type the
path as part of the filename every time you save or load
weaving or design files.
Comments:
Normally, on a floppy system you should save your files on
a diskette in the B drive. A hard disk user will probably
want several different subdirectories for various kinds of
weaving. You can alter the directories used after startup
with Setup/File Paths.

______________________________________________________________
Command: File/Change/Help Files Directory < FCH >
Purpose: Change the directory path for on-line help.
Information:
The default help path is the program files location.
Comments:
Normally, you leave this path "A:\" on a floppy system or
"C:\PWS\" on a hard disk. Special circumstances like a
foreign language translation or other customized help files
may make changing the default directory desireable.

______________________________________________________________
Command: File/Read < FR >
Purpose: Browse a text file on the weaving path.
Information:
This option can display text files up to 76 characters by
300 lines. The .PNF suffix IS automatically added; end the
filename with a period if it has no suffix, or add a
different suffix if you need to.
Comments:
Normally, your note files will relate to weavings, so this
feature looks on the weaving path if you don't specify a
different path in the name of the file. To read a .PNF
Patternland note file that prints automatically, you would
specify a filename like "Pattern1". Likewise, to read the
current printer driver you would specify "A:Patland.pdv" or
"C:\pws\Patland.pdv". Only Read and Write file options
allow specifying the filname suffix.
Once you are browsing a file, you can use either a mouse or
the keys listed in the window footer to move forward or
backward through the file. As usual, the left mouse button
equals a <space>; the right button, <enter>; and both buttons,
< ? >--which exits the browse screen.

______________________________________________________________
Command: File/Write < FW >
Purpose: Write a .PNF text file on the weaving path.
Information:
See Help/Editor for complete information on Patternland's
brand new Editor accessed with this command.
Patternland's word editor has most of the features found in
a full-fledged word processor, excluding word wrap. It
includes the full range of cursor movement and block
operations, using the Wordstar command set and shortcut
function keys. It can edit a file up to 20,000 characters,
regardless of the number of lines, but Patternland can only
File/Read 300 lines (so use this option to read files
longer than 300 lines).
Using the Insert File operation (F5 or ^KR), you can use the
file "Format.PNF" as a form to record all the specifications
and weaving notes you need. And you can edit the
"Format.PNF" file to customize it to your liking.
Comments:
Normally, your note files will relate to weavings;
Write/File will save on the weaving path if you don't
specify a different directory as part of the filename.
Patternland looks for a file with the ".PNF" suffix every
time it prints a weaving and the Options/Note Print switch
is ON. So, the editor includes the suffix ".PNF" in your
filename automatically unless you end the filename with a
period or another suffix.
To create a note file that prints with the Note Print
switch, and uses the standard form file:
Choose File/Write
Use the name of the weaving file (PWS adds ".PNF")
In the blank new note file, press F5 to insert a file.
Specify the name "Format" (PWS adds ".PNF")
Press F7-F8 to unmark the text.
Add your notes under the form's headings.
Press F1 to save and quit the editor.

______________________________________________________________
Command: File/Erase < FE >
Purpose: Delete any file on a disk or diskette.
Information:
Only one file can be deleted at a time: global masks like
"*.*" are not allowed.
Comments:
File/Erase cannot be undone except in special circumstances
using a commercial utility program. Therefore use care in
selecting files to clean off your disks. If you do not
specify a directory path, Patternland looks for the file on
the weaving directory. If it is elsewhere, specify the path
it is on as part of the filename. You will be asked to
confirm erasure of each file.

______________________________________________________________
Command: File/Quit < FQ >
Purpose: Exit Patternland, returning to DOS.
Information:
Patternland leaves no files dangling open during normal
operation, so a power failure causing program termination
without exit will not cause any permanent problems.
Comments:
File/Quit can only be undone by reloading the program and
the files you wish to work on. Therefore be careful you
have saved your work PRIOR to quitting the program.
Patternland will ask you to confirm that you wish to quit.
