Command: File/Save < FS>
Purpose: Preserve weaving and total environment.
Information:
When you choose this option, you are first presented with a
window to write a Title Line for your weaving. This line is
used by Light Weave to display information about your file
when you load it from disk. It is also printed by Weave
Simulator when you print your weaving with the Title Line
ON. If you escape from the Title Line window without writing
a Title, no Title Line file (name.PTL) is created.
After you write a Title or Escape from the Title Line
Window, you are given the Filename window. Filenames are
limited to 8 characters with no spaces or punctuation
allowed. The weaving will be saved to the File Path
displayed in the window, unless you preface the name with a
different directory. If you are resaving a weaving with the
same name, simply press Enter.
You must save your work to diskette or your hard disk BEFORE
you exit Patternland if you wish to retrieve the same
weaving or other file later. When you choose the File/Quit
option, you are reminded of this fact.
Weaving filename has format [name].PWV; suffix stands for
Patternland WeaVing. File contains:
current warp, weft, and tieup limits
threading with color & symbol selections
weft harness combinations with colors and symbols
treadling
tieups
color video palette for EGA/VGA (also default
color set to maintain compatibility)
warp and weft multi-symbol sets for text modes
250 program settings, including all toggle
settings and program colors
Comments:
It is PRUDENT to have at least two copies on separate
diskettes of EVERY important file. Diskettes and hard disks
are not failsafe; an entire hard disk or floppy can become
unusable in an instant--through no fault of yours. Either a
problem with the disk drive or the disk itself can be to
blame. So keep diskettes clean and away from magnets and
ALWAYS back-up your work.
To make a back-up file on a different diskette:
(1) Save the file on the original diskette.
(2) Swap the backup diskette for the original.
(3) Save the file again with the same name by simply
pressing enter instead of typing a name.
To make a backup file on a diskette for hard disk users:
(1) Save the file on your hard disk.
(2) Put a backup diskette in the A drive.
(3) Preface your filename with "A:" and save again.

Command: File/Load < FL>
Purpose: Retrieve weaving and total environment.
Information:
This option loads a weaving from disk. If a title line file
exists, it is loaded also.
When you choose File/Load, a listing of all subdirectories
and all weaving files on the current weaving path is
presented in a Pick Weaving File to Load window. To load a
file with the keyboard, simply use the arrow keys to
highlight it, then press Enter to accept. With the mouse,
point and click to highlight and point and click again to
accept. To change directories, just highlight and accept a
directory name. The name "\PREV SUBDIR" is available to
navigate back along the directory path.
Three options are available by mouse click or Function key:
F1:Info -- Shows the date, time, & size of the
highlighted file, and displays the Title
Line if there is one.
F2:Path -- Gives you a window to change directories.
F3:Name -- Allows you to type a filename to load so
you don't have to display its directory
before loading.
Comments:
A weaving file IS the current Patternland configuration.
When Patternland loads, it looks for a several files,
including "Patland.PWV". Patland.PWV provides the
environment for beginning a weaving with the correct
settings for your system. When you save and reload a
weaving, all program settings are restored.
If you upgrade to an EGA or VGA system, you must choose
Install/Displays/[your display] before the new features will
be available. Then resave the weaving to avoid repeating
the process.
Patternland also checks the command line for a .PWV filename
to load instead of "Patland.PWV". No /switch is required.
To load another weaving/environment on startup, type:
PLW [filename]

Command: File/Directory < FD >
Purpose: Show a matched list of files on the current path.
Information:
When you choose File/Directory, you are presented with a
list of all files on the current weaving directory. This
window is just like File/Load, in that you can request date,
time, size, and Title Line information with F1; and you
change directories with F2:Path or by highlighting and
accepting another directory in the window. In addition,
F3:Mask allows you to limit which files are displayed.
By specifying the desired path and file mask, you can
display only those files of immediate interest on any
directory.
Comments:
The path is the complete address of where the file is
living: on a floppy system it may be as simple as "B:\"; on
a hard disk it might be as long as "\weaving\overshot\".
The "mask" lets only files matching its "outline" show
through. The all-inclusive mask is "*.*"; the asterisk is a
DOS wildcard which selects all files. A mask of "*.pwv"
would select all files with a ".pwv" suffix. A mask of
"Pattern1.*" would select all types of files with the
"Pattern1" prefix. Lastly, a mask of "Pattern?.pwv" would
select only "Pattern_" weaving files with any character in
place of the "?". A "?" stands for one wild character; "*"
is a wildcard name up to 8 characters.
To select all the "Pattern" files on the \weaving
subdirectory, you would type "\weaving\pattern?.*" when the
directory screen asks for a new path.

Command: File/Change < FC >
Purpose: A menu to change directories for weaving or help.
Information:
Patternland will attempt to change to the requested
directory path. If the path is invalid, an error message
warns you and Patternland returns to the previous directory.
Comments:
You can preselect a path when you load Light Weave.
<PLW b:/f b:/h> sets file and help paths to the B drive.

______________________________________________________________
Command: File/Change/Weaving Directory < FCW >
Purpose: Change the directory path for weaving files.
Information:
The default weaving file path is the program files location.
By changing to a new path you can avoid having to type the
path as part of the filename every time you save or load a
weaving.
You can also change the current directory from the File/Load
and File/Directory windows.
Comments:
Normally, on a floppy system you should save your files on a
diskette in the B drive. A hard disk user will probably
want several different subdirectories for various kinds of
weaving.

______________________________________________________________
Command: File/Change/Help Files Directory < FCH >
Purpose: Change the directory path for on-line help.
Information:
The default help path is the program files location.
Comments:
Normally, you leave this path "A:\" on a floppy system or
"C:\PLW\" on a hard disk. Special circumstances like a
foreign language translation or other customized help files
may make changing the default directory desirable.

______________________________________________________________
Command: File/Read Text < FR >
Purpose: Browse a text file on the weaving path.
Information:
This option can display text files up to 76 characters by
300 lines. The .PNF suffix IS automatically added; end the
filename with a period if it has no suffix, or add a
different suffix if you need to.
Comments:
Normally, your note files will relate to weavings, so this
feature looks on the weaving path if you don't specify a
different path in the name of the file.
Once you are browsing a file, you can use either a mouse or
the keys listed in the window footer to move forward or
backward through the file. As usual, the left mouse button
equals a <space>; the right button, <enter>; and both
buttons, < ? >--which exits the browse screen.

______________________________________________________________
Command: File/Write Text < FW >
Purpose: Write a .PNF text file on the weaving path.
Information:
See Help/Word Editing for complete information on
Patternland's Word Editor accessed with this command.
Patternland's word editor has most of the features found in
a full-fledged word processor, excluding word wrap. It
includes the full range of cursor movement and block
operations, using the Wordstar command set and shortcut
function keys. It can edit a file up to 20,000 characters,
regardless of the number of lines, but Patternland can only
File/Read 300 lines (so use this option to read files longer
than 300 lines).
Using the Insert File operation (F5 or ^KR), you can use the
file "Format.PNF" as a form to record all the specifications
and weaving notes you need. And you can edit the
"Format.PNF" file to customize it to your liking.
Comments:
Normally, your note files will relate to weavings;
File/Write will save on the weaving path if you don't
specify a different directory as part of the filename.
To create a note file that uses the standard format file:
Choose File/Write
Use the name of the weaving file (PLW adds ".PNF")
In the blank new note file, press F5 to insert a file.
Specify the name "Format" (PLW adds ".PNF")
Press F7-F8 to unmark the text.
Add your notes under the form's headings.
Press F1 to save and quit the editor.

______________________________________________________________
Command: File/Erase < FE >
Purpose: Delete any file on a disk or diskette.
Information:
Only one file can be deleted at a time: global masks like
"*.*" are not allowed.
Comments:
File/Erase cannot be undone except in special circumstances
using a commercial utility program. Therefore use care in
selecting files to clean off your disks. If you do not
specify a directory path, Patternland looks for the file on
the weaving directory. If it is elsewhere, specify the path
it is on as part of the filename. You will be asked to
confirm erasure of each file.

______________________________________________________________
Command: File/Quit < FQ >
Purpose: Exit Patternland, returning to DOS.
Information:
Patternland leaves no files dangling open during normal
operation, so a power failure causing program termination
without exit will not cause any permanent problems.
Comments:
File/Quit can only be undone by reloading the program and
the files you wish to work on. Therefore be careful you
have saved your work PRIOR to quitting the program.
Patternland will ask you to confirm that you wish to quit.
