Community Place Tips & Tricks
In addition to our basic functions, we'd like to introduce some "Tips" and sample file "Tricks", which will make your Community Place experience a more exciting adventure.
Tips&Tricks
- To save memory
Everyone knows that loading and rendering a 3D scene consumes a large amount of memory. If you would like to navigate in 3D space, you should make as much memory as possible available for the exclusive use of the Community Place browser application.
For example:
- Don't leave other Windows applications open on your desktop while browsing VRML worlds.
You should restart Windows95 to clear your memory space, if possible, before loading Community Place.
- Don't use Netscape Navigator to load your VRML world files.
Instead, you can use the Community Place File/Open option to directly load wrl files, or you can drag and drop the main.wrl file for your VRML world directly into the Community Place browser window.
- Restart Community Place frequently
Community Place can cache large amounts of VRML world data. If you continue to load and browse new world files, Community Place consumes more and more memory. If you find your system slowing down as a result, you should close and restart the Community Place browser.
- Check your memory with the Windows95 System Monitor
You can see the memory status with the System Monitor utility packaged with Windows95 SYSTEM TOOLS. If the SWAP FILE size becomes large, the performance of your system becomes worse.
- To navigate faster
Resize the Community Place window smaller.
- To access the Community Place multi-user server through a Firewall
If your site is equipped with a Firewall to the Internet and you wish to access a Community Place multi-user world, you must setup the SOCKS hosts.
Ask your system administrator for the name of your SOCKS host as well as its Port number. Then enter this information in your Community Place Preferences window found on the View pulldown menu.
- To change your online nickname.
When you enter a multi user world, your nickname which other users see will be the same as the login name you used when you started Windows 95. To change this name, select the Preferences option from Community Place's View pulldown menu. Enter the name you wish to share with other users in the Nick Name field listed in the Preferences window.
