There
are many possible starting points for the study of Aboriginal cultures
- One approach
begins with contemporary
stories,
and looks at the lives of Indigenous Australians, how they are living
and what they are doing, today
- Another approach
begins with 'traditional'
Dreaming
stories,
and explains how stories, people, land
and Dreaming are connected, and
have always been central to all aspects of life. This approach goes
on to show how Dreaming is still central to the great richness and
diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait cultures.
- A third uses
an historical
approach,
and examines the history of Aboriginal peoples and their cultures.
It often looks, at the past, the impact of white invasion, and the
movement to survival and self determination.
- Experienced teachers may wish to include Aboriginal
perspectives across the curriculum. This approach is a current focus
in many Australian states,
but requires considerable experience to be successful. Information
for Australian teachers and other here.
