LONDON, ENGLAND
Location: London is the
center of commercial and artistic life in Great Britain. It is justly
famous for its parks, monuments, museums, concert halls, and theatres.
It is truly one of the greatest cities in the world. Students in the
program have the opportunity to study and explore this great city,
enjoying the almost unlimited possibilities of this cultural center.
The seminar takes place in and around the city of London. Regular
classes are held at the University of London Seminar Centre. Trips are
planned outside the city to, among others, Oxford, Stratford-upon-Avon,
Camden Lock, Bath, and other informal local visits, including walking
tours of London's famous parks.
PurposeTo explore British Theatre
through its cultural and creative traditions. To examine British
Theatre from a distinctly English cultural and historical
perspective. To encourage students to discover their own London
through field lectures, visits to historic buildings, and
museums.
OrientationAn optional
pre-departure orientation will take place several weeks prior to
departure. Seminar members will be instructed in the various
expectations of the course, as well as the nitty-gritty details of
exchanging money, what to wear, food, weather, etc. When: The
program takes place during intersession in the first part of January,
for two weeks.
Qualifications
Students wishing to participate in the seminar for credit must be
students in good standing at an accredited college with above average
academic record.
Curriculum The
program is a two-week seminar in London in January, covering the
historic and cultural traditions inherent in British Theatre. Program
directors will select plays which offer unique insight into those
traditions a seen in the theatre. the seminar will discuss six plays in
depth. Other plays are added to the seminar as they become available.
Tickets will include the best available at the Royal Shakespeare
Company, as well as other interesting works in the West End, Fringe, and
experimental theatres.
CreditThree
upper division liberal arts credits (SUNY/New Paltz students may satisfy
GE I and II Aesthetic Expression.) Participants from non-SUNY
campuses are recommended to meet with their academic advisor to
determine if credits earned on a SUNY, New Paltz program are
transferable. Credits are automatically transferable between SUNY
campuses.
InsuranceStudents must
have approved insurance coverage while abroad. SUNY medical insurance is
available and the SUNY Evacuation/Repatriation Insurance is
mandatory.
ExpensesThe program cost
is approximately $1,399.00, not including application, fees, and
tuition. Price includes round-trip airfare, hotel, theatre tickets,
transfers, lectures, guest speakers, admission to special events.
Full-time SUNY New Paltz students may add the seminar to their spring
semester. Financial Aid: Financial aid awarded by your home
campus may be used to defer the charges for tuition and program fee,
pending receipt of actual Financial Aid funds. All other costs of
program must be met by personal funds as required, pending reimbursement
upon receipt of actual Financial Aid funds, if applicable.
HousingParticipants will stay at the
President Hotel, Bloomsbury Square. The hotel is well maintained and the
staff is friendly and helpful. Rooms are all doubles (single supplement
available) with private bath. Meals: Limited room service;
continental breakfast included with room. Traditional English breakfast
is available as an additional supplement.
Free TimeAmple free time is provided seminar members to
discover their own London or to pursue special interests that they may
have. Whether at the Food Halls, of Harrods, and Fortnam and
Mason's; or the designer's shops on King's Road; or the
outdoor antique booths on Portabello Road; or "grunge" stalls at
Camden Lock; or the elegant Victorian interiors of public houses (pubs),
participants are encouraged to come away with a special insight into
this culture.
Applying How:
Submit the SUNY Application for Overseas Academic Program to the Office
International Education, along with a non-refundable $25.00
application fee. Upon receipt of all supporting documents, your
completed application will be reviewed for admission into your desired
program. You will receive the results of our decision as soon as
possible after your admission review. When: Early application
is always recommended! The Office of International Education will begin
making admissions decisions starting October 1 for Spring programs.
Completed applications will be reviewed on a "first come, first
serve" basis, subject to available space in the program.
