How to... Questions
How do I print a set of identical labels? To print identical labels:
You will be prompted to enter the data for one label. When you print, the label will be duplicated and the number of labels specified will be printed.
How do I get an entire label with several fields, into a single field for export? I am using a text file that has fields separated by tabs and records separated by carriage returns. The name (first) field appears on each label but nothing else. How do I get all the fields to print? Multiple field label data can be handled easily by Aetiket Label Printer. Please consult the following page: Printing Labels from Multiple Field Data Files
How do I change the default font from Arial/Helvetica to one I like? Aetiket Label Printer was designed using standard the Arial or Helvetica typeface in various sizes. I chose these typefaces because they are available on both Macintosh and Windows computers, and being sans-serif they print clearly on ink jet printers. FileMaker Pro provides extensive text and paragraph editing tools, and these can be used to select different typefaces and styles on a label by label basis in the Input page.
How do I import a custom graphic into Aetiket Label Printer? See Installing Custom Graphics for more information.
How do I access the layout mode in Aetiket Label Printer?
When I set up the default text, it doesn't include alignment, font or size. Isn't it supposed to? The default text box was provided as a feature in response to a customer suggestion. Unfortunately with FileMaker Pro, it is not possible to store the style or paragraph formatting information with the data in a consistent manner. Although text style information is sometimes handled correctly, FileMaker Pro doesn't store paragraph data. For these reasons the default text doesn't retain style or paragraph formatting. I assure you that as soon as FileMaker Inc. decides to provide this basic functionality, I will provide this for you in Aetiket Label Printer.
Can you save any of the labels that you create? Yes, you can save labels and there are a couple of methods for doing so.
See Advanced Data Importing and Integration for more information on the various methods of linking your own database with Aetiket Label Printer.
How do I call Aetiket Label Printer's functionality from inside my own database? See Advanced Data Importing and Integration for more information.
Features Questions
Can you add a label type to Aetiket Label Printer? I have just registered for this product but note that it does not support a label I use regularly! Certainly! The number of labels supported has increased steadily with feedback from my customers. Recently, I have added support for various media labels and A4 metric sizes. If you regularly use a label sheet that is available commercially, please send me a blank copy for prototyping. I will add it to Aetiket Label Printer in an update. Please send an unfolded blank copy of your label sheet to: Aetiket Label Printer Support I use the label sheets my customers send me to test and ensure that the labels will print correctly. Faxes often change the size of the originals, and are not reliable as a guide for fine tuning. Click here for a list of the currently supported label types.
Is there a way I can modify the templates?
Scripts make it possible to integrate Aetiket Label Printer with other FileMaker Pro databases. If there are specific modifications you would like to see in Aetiket Label Printer, let me know: I would prefer to see them made available to all of my customers.
There doesn't seem to be a way to set the default font in the preference menu. Selecting a particular font or size on the input screen only sets the type specs for one label. Hitting the arrow key for the next label causes the program to return to the default font and specs. Each label is actually a separate record and field of data as far as FileMaker Pro is concerned. This is why the text or paragraph formatting that is applied to one label doesn't transfer to the other labels. If FileMaker Pro provided me with tools to accomplish this, I would do so. Until then, we will have to be patient and set the formatting for each label.
Is it possible to program the application so the graphic can be moved anywhere within the field? (On your program you center your graphic in the middle of the field.) The default for the background graphic is centered. The best way to make sure that your custom graphics are correctly placed in the label space is to design them the same size to fit the label space. Try the following link for information on how to create a custom graphic or logo.
Does Aetiket Label Printer support A4 (metric) sizes? I'm from Perth, Western Australia (or Germany, Sweden, Japan, etc.) and our Avery sizes are titled by a different system. Aetiket Label Printer can be modified to support almost any label sheets. Recently, I have added support for A4 metric sizes based on feedback from my customers overseas.
I'd like to see support for an asymmetrical label type. The Avery 2163 label is 2 inches high by 4 inches wide, with 4 per page and in an unusual layout (the label layout on the page isn't perfectly symmetrical). Aetiket Label Printer's design requires that the label sheets be symmetrical on both the vertical and horizontal dimensions. Also, it is necessary that all labels on the page be the same size. I am willing to consider custom sheets designs for my site licensed customers however.
Registration Questions
I've trying to register my copy of Aetiket Label Printer, but every time I get the message "the registration code is incorrect". The most likely reason for this error is that the registration code has been typed incorrectly. To avoid this, please copy and paste the registration code directly from your registration email.
Please provide me with the address you want to receive the registration dues. I want to send a money order but you provided two different addresses, one in the US and one in Canada.
If I want to register by mail, which form do I fill out and how do I print it to mail? Select Registration for full discussion of your Aetiket Label Printer registration options.
General Questions
Where is the help file? Is there a primer for using the program? You are reading the help file. Rather than create a big user's manual filled with information few people will need, I have relied on questions posed to me by my users as the basis for these help pages.
Do I need FileMaker Pro to use this program? I have MS Office and ClarisWorks, but not FileMaker.
Any plans for something similar for those of use who have ClarisWorks databases? I saw your Press Release and Aetiket Label Printer sounds great except.... I don't use FileMaker Pro! Although ClarisWorks contains a database feature that looks and functions similarly to FileMaker Pro, it lacks the sophisticated tools and features that made creating Aetiket Label Printer possible. A ClarisWorks version is unfortunately not possible.
Can an ink jet printer print on labels designated for a laser printer? Yes. There is no dimensional difference between the labels as defined in Aetiket Label Printer. However, the labels printing layouts have been defined slightly differently to print optimally on laser printers and ink jet printers. Furthermore, because they are defined as separate labels, the default text and custom graphics can be stored separately. Although as far as Aetiket Label Printer is concerned the labels are interchangeable, it is important to note that there may be physical differences between the labels: laser labels use an adhesive that is resistant to the heat of label printers or photocopiers, while ink jet labels use a paper that absorbs the liquid ink jet inks.
Is it a bug? It has three body parts and six legs...
Shakespeare
When I attempt to print multiple (duplicate) copies of the same label with centered text only the first label is centered. The other labels remain left justified. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong? You are not doing something wrong. Unfortunately, FileMaker Pro doesn't store paragraph formatting in copy and paste operations and consequently I cannot provide the feature as Aetiket Label Printer is currently designed. The only solution at present is to apply the paragraph formatting to each label. As soon as the engineers at FileMaker Inc. decide to provide me with these tools, I will make it available to my customers.
I can't get Aetiket Label Printer to correctly import a tab-delimited text file. When I import the file, only the first line of the labels are printed. Is this a bug? This is not a bug. Aetiket Label Printer expects to receive only one field of data for a label. For information on how to create a single field from multi-field data, select Printing Labels from Multiple Field Data Files.
There does not seem to be a way to vary the lead (where the printer starts printing from the top of the page) of the label page going in to the printer. Neither of my printers works right on the Avery templates in FileMaker Pro as far as where the page starts printing. FileMaker Pro is at the mercy of the printer drivers used. Depending on the driver, the page settings such as maximum and minimum dimensions and printing areas differ. This makes it quite difficult to create printing layouts that will print on every kind of printer. I have tested Aetiket Label Printer on various printer and printer driver combinations, and have had relatively consistent results. If you have a printer/driver combination that does not print correctly, please let me know.
