Short review of BIOTECHNICA '95
More foreign and professional visitors in an applications-oriented exhibitionFor the ninth time, BIOTECHNICA in Hannover was the meeting place for opinion-leaders, users, researchers and developers from all over the world. The Exhibition Grounds in Hannover was from 10th to 12th October 1995 once again the most important international forum for making business contacts and sharing information. At the end of the three-day exhibition, the majority of the 434 exhibitors (1991: 383, 1993: 430) were either pleased or very pleased with the business deals and contacts they had made. These exhibitors, from 17 different countries, presented their innovative products and latest research results from all fields of biotechnology to some 9000 professional visitors from all over the world. The net exhibition area was 7219 m2. The numerous national and international joint stands offered excellent opportunities for technology transfer through the symbiosis of universities, research institutes and industry. Almost 26% of exhibitors came from abroad. Again the largest contingent was from the USA with 38 companies, followed by the United Kingdom with 24 and Russia with 12 companies. . The exhibition attracted industry professionals (95% of visitors) of outstanding competence, the majority of whom were involved in purchasing decisions. Some 48% of visitors (1993: 35%) represented their companies at a high managerial level (president, managing director, head of department). As a result the degree of decision-making authority (advisory capacity to final decision-making) amongst visitors rose from 78.9% to 85.1%. The percentage of foreign professional visitors also increased from 19.9% to 22.2%. Moreover, high-ranking delegations from Japan, Korea and the USA took advantage of the BIOTECHNICA to establish contacts. Of all foreign visitors 47.4% were from EU countries, 20.2% from the USA, 13.5% from Asia, 17.5% from the rest of Europe (including eastern Europe) and a small percentage from Africa and Australia. And those visitors represented all sectors of the economy: universities, the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, plant engineering, commerce, food industry, environmental sector, agriculture and so on. The combination of exhibition and supporting congress/seminar programme , featuring prominent experts as well as numerous topical company lectures focused on practical applications, provided the industry with some interesting ways of marketing new ideas and research results.
