From: "Kel Wagner" bladester@frodo.com In view of the recent submission of space junk photos to your website, I thought I should share my favorite little piece of space junk with you. I found this piece on a beach near here in Sonoma County, California approximately ten years ago. It was not then, nor has it ever since, become tarnished in any way. It's clearly metallic and appears to me as though it hit water while it was still nearly in a molten state. I admit, I've never really had it examined by anyone aside from asking an astronomy instructor about it at our local community college. His only answer was, "Most people who think they have meteorites actually have 'meteor-wrongs'." He suggested I have someone in the chemistry department examine it to possibly determine its metallic content. I chose to make it into a necklace instead. It's made up of very hard, very difficult to bend metal as I understand titanium is. Titanium also doesn't really tarnish except to become a little bit more gray after prolonged exposure to the elements. This object seems to have those characteristics and just becomes more shiny with wearing.
From: Amy Bell apbmcp@hotmail.com Attached please find a photo I took on a flight descending into the airport in Orlando on February 7, 2001. It's a year ago yesterday that I got this shot, how time flies...no pun intended. And to think, a shot like that will never be taken again, or as long as the airspace around the Space Center is restricted, which, I imagine, will be forever...
Robert Talaga (rtalaga@earthlink.net) sends us: Here's a photo of Comet Ikeya-Zhang taken from my backyard observatory on the evening of March 26. A 12" telescope and CCD camera were used to acquire the photo. The comet is now faintly visible to the unaided eye in the western sky shortly after sunset.
Ben (fnlfinison@juno.com) sends us this favorite from a year ago, titled: "The Earth At Night"
George in Apple Valley, Ca. (Orbitgeo@aol.com) sends us: I'd like to share a photo with you, my interest in Astronomy was recently 're-kindled' with the fact that a couple of co-workers purchased telescopes this winter. As I was bombarded with the usual questions, I decided to take up Astro-photography again and with the new equipment, it looks very promising. The enclosed photo was taken Saturday, January 13, 2002 from your own back yard (Apple Valley) Ca. Hope you enjoy it and keep doing the great job on your show. I'll be listening.
