PokΘMon Pikachu Report

By Shoji of Euro-Asia Game Boy

A new Pokemon Pikachu game has been released in Japan. It's the latest addition to the Pocket Monsters series which consists of the Red Edition, Blue Edition, Green Edition, Silver Edition and Gold Edition. (Slimu's Note: Gold/Silver hasn't been released has it? No it hasn't...) Best of all, this edition is GB Printer compatible. It also shows up 3D graphics if put into the N64 booster.
Shoji (of EAGB) has just finished the PokeMon Pikachu Version game. Below is his report on some of the differences and highlights of this version.

  • Your new rival is EON.
  • Similar to the PokeMon cartoons, Hitokage (Charmander), Zenigame (Squirtle), Hushigidane (Bulbasaur) can be won over from their trainers and become yours as you battle along the way.
  • The Pikachu that travels along with you cannot evolve and become Ray. Only other Pikachus that you capture will evolve.
  • Lots of characters from the PokeMon cartoon appears in the game. Just to name a few:
    • Junsar - the policewoman
    • Joui and Lucky - nurses of PokeMon Center
    • Musashi and Kojirou (Jesse and James) - members of Rocket-Dan (Team Rocket)
  • Places where the various PokeMons appear are different than other versions.
  • The pictures and the descriptions of the monsters in the PokeMon illustration book is different than the other versions.
  • When using a earphone with the game, the balance on either side of the BGM can be set (unlike the other versions).
  • When using the Pikachu Version of the GameBoy game in the N64 Pocket Monster Stadium, you can:
    • In Nintendo Cup - Use 3 different types of PokeMon who's levels are from 50 -55. The total levels of the 3 PokeMons that you choose must be equal to or less than level 155. Myu however cannot be used.
    • In Yellow Cup - Use 3 different types of PokeMon who's levels are from 15 - 20. The total levels of the 3 PokeMons that you choose must be equal to or less than level 50. Myu also cannot be used.
    • In Fancy Cup - Use 3 different types of PokeMon who's levels are from 25 - 30. The total levels of the 3 PokeMons that you choose must be equal to or less than level 80. The height of the PokeMons chosen must be equal to or less than 2 meters. And the weight must be equal to or less than 20 Kg. PokeMons must also not be Fire Creatures. And Myu cannot be used

There are various other minor changes to the game, which Shoji will let you find out for yourselves.

Here are some opening screen shots of Yellow PokeMon Version which shows Pikachu flying in the air and riding the waves on a surfboard..

Here's you can see one of the Super GameBoy frames that you can choose. There are many cute ones to choose from.
Here is a screen-shot of a smiling Pikachu which indicates that he's in excellent condition. This screen is an option in the game that can be called-up when needed.

Below is a screen shot of the PokeMon statistics printed with the GameBoy Printer. In the other versions of PokeMon, when you go to the computer room of Tamamushi Mansion in Tamamushi City, you can only see the PokeMon statistics being displayed on the computer. In this Yellow Pikachu PokeMon Version however, not only is the design of the PokeMon statistics different, it is also GameBoy printer compatible. Now you can show off your strongest monster's statistics to your friends.

Mini-Game

The mini game is called "Pikachu no Summer Beach". And the object of the game is to get Pikachu to the beach safely. Balancing Pikachu on the waves requires excellent maneuvering of the directional buttons. Bonus points are also awarded if Pikachu manages to do stunts like a slalom or jump over a wave. Your record or best time in this mini game can also be printed with the Pocket Printer. Hang-loose Pikachu!
