Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0

Adobe Acrobat Reader is a free program for opening, viewing and printing files in the widely-used PDF document format. It does not allow editing of PDF files or creation of new files – to create new PDF files see PrimoPDF below.

You may already have Acrobat Reader on your computer, but version 7.0 includes a number of improvements compared to earlier versions.

To install Adobe Acrobat Reader:

1. Click this link: Install Adobe Acrobat Reader from this CD.
2. Save the file to a location on your computer.
3. Find the file you have just saved on your computer and open it to start the installation.
4. Read and follow any further on-screen instructions.

Aladdin 5.0

Aladdin Expander is a file decompression tool that gives quick and easy access to ZIP and other compressed or archived files, regardless of the platform they were created on or how they were transmitted.

It has similar functions to some of those found in ZipGenius, but with the useful additional feature of handling StuffIt files created on Apple Macs.

To install Aladdin:

FileZilla 2.2

FileZilla is a free FTP (File Transfer Protocol) client that can be used to transfer files from one computer to another – for example for uploading files to a web server. It has a graphical interface for managing movement of files between local and remote computers, including drag-and-drop features, and for viewing and modifying files at both ends of the transfer.

FileZilla uses SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol), meaning that files are encrypted for transfer to ensure security of data.

To install FileZilla:

PrimoPDF

PrimoPDF allows you to create PDF (Adobe Acrobat) files directly from a file created in another program, for example Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint or most other Windows-based software.

When PrimoPDF has been installed, its name appears in the list of printers available from the ‘Print’ command (usually under the ‘File’ menu) in your other Windows programs. If you select PrimoPDF from this list, and then ‘print’ your file, it will be converted to a PDF file rather than appearing as a printed paper copy.

To install PrimoPDF:

Spybot S&D 1.4

Spybot S&D (it stands for ‘Search and Destroy’) is a free tool that checks your PC for spyware and removes what it finds. For more information on the problem of spyware, see the Spyware protection section of this CD.

Spybot has to be kept up to date using its ‘Search for Updates’ function (similar to LiveUpdate in Symantec Anti-Virus), and is not guaranteed to find every spyware problem. For best results you should use Spybot together with at least one other anti-spyware tool, such as Ad-Aware, available free for personal use from www.lavasoft.de.

To install Spybot S&D:

Read the notes to help you install and use Spybot S&D (6-page PDF document – we suggest you print this for reference).

ZipGenius 6.0.2

ZipGenius is a tool for managing and working with compressed ZIP files. You can open and modify existing files, extract and decompress the contents of files, and create new ZIP archives containing one or more other files.

Among many other features it supports creation of self-extracting archive files.
